October Recap!
“I love you are so into Halloween,” said a mom friend when my family showed up at a friends house for a pre trick or treat get together. I walked in wearing a giant papier mache eyeball that hardly fit through the door and both kiddos had outfits with fun handmade touches.
But I don’t or I didn’t love Halloween. Drawing a lot of attention to myself- ugh. The chore of getting this one time outfit- no! and the pressure to consume scary media or pretend I like creepy stuff - I’d rather not. Let’s just jump ahead to Thanksgiving.
Here i am in the 80s as an indifferent little witch.
People that love Halloween are fun though- they are the people that laugh at scares, don’t mind attention and love to be bold. I kinda wish I was that kind of person, BUT maybe I kinda am now. I just made it more of my own thing, less creepy more silly and comfy.
It’s also been fun to make stuff without any delusion I would somehow make money from making this stuff. I think I have been a bit trapped to the idea that time, money and creativity are unbreakably linked. Halloween decorating and creating been a fun way to jumpstart creativity and have a bit of a deadline for finishing things without a boss or client asking for it.
Recapping all creative things this month
Some things I made this month:
For Halloween: A papier mache eyeball, a silicone mold of my hand, a spider web, a couple of carved pumpkins and I helped a bit with this portal to another dimension thing.
For just fun: I also made some small progress on my stop-motion alien project that I am working on by making the mouths, and started a fun secret project for my friends 40th birthday….and started this website and blog!
Some things I liked this month:
How To with John Wilson - It’s the best. A documentary filmmaker curates all this footage from his one man camera crew into beautiful journeys that explore humanity. Its funny and wild and sad and thoughtful - find it on Max.
Heavyweight Podcast new season - It’s not just on Spotify again! Hosted by Johnathan Goldstein it shares a lot in common with John Wilson, documentary production that uncovers so much about people and the choices they make. https://gimletmedia.com/shows/heavyweight
Samatha Irby’s substack called “What’s on Judge Mathis.” I love her writing! So funny, I have never watched Judge Mathis, but I can’t get enough of her giving a detailed play-by-play of what goes down on each episode. Trust me - so good. https://open.substack.com/pub/bitchesgottaeat/p/whos-on-judge-mathis-today-185?utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web
